View Thread: One Car

I remember Car and Driver doing an article like this way way back when (like 8 years ago?) and while surfing the forums over there I stumbled across a thread about this same subject.

The question is: If you could have one car, to live with, day in and day out, as your only car (yes that does mean if you have a significant other they can go reasonable) what would it be. Also note that this only includes the car, such items like maintenance, insurance and gas must also be considered before a choice is made. So, you can pick a hyper exotic, but if it breaks down, you gotta fix it (after the warranty is up, natch).

So what would everyone pick? I think it would be cool to attach a pic of what your dream car is. Also note that cars can be from the past and present, not the future. Also, no selling of priceless cars (Ferrari 250GTO) to buy a whole bunch of new cars.

Enjoy

CLK-GTR
Ferrari F40 LM Stradale. Having been in one they arent too uncomfortable due to the perfect seats, and that noise, and the whole experience easily outweighs the minor annoyances of such a low and expensive car.

BMW M5
Fast, good looking, not flashy, useful. I'd get to know the guys at Dinan too.

I need a car with a healthy dose of horsepower, excellent handling, and awesome brakes. A manual tranny is a must, and must pull double duty as a family hauler and grocery getter. So here are my choices. I like them all. I'd be happy with any of them:

The Dinan S2 program features:
Peak Horsepower…………470 bhp @ 6900 rpm
Peak Torque………………419 lb/ft @ 5000 rpm

Lancer Evolution VIII
No need to explain why. And maintenance would be cheaper than the bimmer.

And last but not least, the Subaru WRX STi. No need to explain this one either.

I would probably pick my dream car.
A BMW M3. The E46, it doesn't have to be fully equiped, just stock would be fine too.
I couldn't fine one in Estroil Blue. Only red for some reason, oh well.

sorry about the large pic.

Although I would eventually come up with something, I don't know what to choose at the moment (I was thinking of Sia's Koenigsegg, in black...)

I'll come back later.

I had trouble picking between the M5 and the M3. I think that at this point i'd be happy with an M3, but if I had a family I'd go with the M5

I would have to go with the Cobra R. It's quick and could outhandle 99% of the cars on the road. Plus it looks good and ricers will think its a regular Mustang with a big wing.

911GT2
911 Turbo for an "everyday supercar" type deal or an M5 for its combination of usefulness and sport.

My sensible side would probably pick something like the new M5 (if with V10) or the new S8 (whatever it may be/whenever it comes out).

Any of the following cars would do nicely:

1. Audi S4 Avant
2. Audi S6 Avant
3. Acura NSX
4. BMW M5

Yeah, I had a bit of trouble between those two too. I finally decided on the M3 because its a coupe, and I'm only a teenager now, so I don't really need a four door, and the insurance would probably kill me. Any I just like coupes better.

Porsche 959(Good in snow!) OR BMW M5/Lotus Carlton Omega ;)

k6kicker
subby wrx...can drive it year round, solid build, good looks, quick, good looks but wont get all the cops flogging you, and since tis not the sti the ricers will leave you be

Lotus
Rs6, or M5. alot of those things cost more to maitain than most cars cost :wow:

mustangdriver
You know, for awhile I would have easily said BMW M5....but I'm starting to head a new direction (and it's nice to be different since there are so many M5's picked so far :D)

I'm going with the 2003 E55 AMG

Eh, I'd probably just stick w/ my wrx for where I live--its a great compromise between fun and practicality. Decent performance, but reasonably comfortable, cheap to insure, ok mileage, great in our nasty winters, 4dr, flies below most police radar...

I suppose I might consider the new legacy turbo or maybe an S60R if I wanted more upscale/bigger. But the volvo probably wouldn't be as reliable, and is more likely to be keyed by jealous types...subie's are just practical fun.

Must it be a real car?
If so, an R34 with the full Nismo treatment would do just fine. :naughty:

Concept car, I would chose a '69 Chevy C10 with a Lingenfelter N/A 427, and Z51 'Vette suspension. For a tranny, I would like either a T56 or an Allison Automatic.

Yeah, but it'd suck having the steering wheel on the wrong side... :p

87 Supra Turbo
I'd go with an STi and swap the STi body parts and badges with the WRX stuff. Low key, fast, good, and since nothing was mentioned about the insurance being covered for life, I can afford the insurance on something like this. I shudder to think of the public humiliation I would go through trying to insure something like an F40.

I think that would be part of the uniqueness and appeal for me.

The 18th Letter
I would choose a Skyline GT-R BNR34 VspecII. It's fast, it's tunable, it has four seats.

FabUlous
thats easy, Datsun 240z with a Nissan VQ 3.5L engine swap and suspension and tranny upgrades..

or i could just stuff in a chevy small block like every other hick out there

Snowslide
Well, M3, STI and Skyline are pretty high up there, but I think I would have to go with an old 240Z with a RB26DETT.

Arthur Dent
athough a FF might be nice. Argh one isn't neally enough because I'd still need Lotus Seven type.

Good thread.

My pick will be something that I would be able to afford, and actually would consider in real life.

I'd have to go with a WRX wagon or a Forester XT turbo. It would depend whether I'd want to go with a bit more room and clearance, or go with better handling, and sportier ride.

Either of these would be the best compromise for uses that I have for vehicles. I could haul people, sport gear, take long trips, and tear up the roads in. Plus, there is 0% financing going on right now on them.

I think I finally came to a decision for what my "one car" would be. It would have to be able to do everything for me, and usually everything involves more than one person, so two seaters are out. My dream car is the previous generation 911 Turbo but I dont think that really fits the bill. The best all round car in my book would have to be the Mercedes Benz E55- in midnight blue, with midnight blue inserts and all of the other Mercedes Benz goodies.

And I might try to convince Brabus of a couple of things, which gives me a great idea for another thread- if you could pick one car and one aftermarket tuner to give you a car, what would they be. Very interesting indeed... more to follow.

mustangdriver
That sounds like a fun thread.
