The Volkswagen Touareg has once again been honoured for its qualities: "Motor Trend”, the best-selling car magazine in the USA, voted the Touareg Sport/Utility Vehicle of the Year for 2004. This is one of the most significant honours of the American market. "The Volkswagen Touareg impressed our editorial staff with its combination of refinement and sheer capability” said Kevin Smith, editor-in-chief of "Motor Trend”.

I don't really like SUVs, but the Tourag is pretty nice. Inside is awesome, and it has some serious offroad capability.

I think VW did an excellent job. Hopefully they won't have too many reliability issues. If they don't, I think they will get a pretty good chunk of the market.

I think for what they designed it for, it is a great vehicle. It is a good compromise of handling and light off road ability.

Touareg has a towing problem. The ad shows it pulling an Airstream trailer but a guy in NY with the same trailer couldn't pull it. The company bought it back.

The hitch weight limit is out of porportion with the pulling power.

The issue is the fact that the vehicle has the lowest tongue weight to Tow weight ratio in it's class. Under 8% ! Should they have touted it's towing abilities ?

GMC Sierra 7500 GTW 1,000 Tongue Weight 13.30%
Grand Cherokee 6500 GTW 750 Tongue Weight 11.50%
Dodge Durango 8700 GTW 1000 Tongue Weight 11.5%
Ford F 150 7900 GTW “Max 15% of GTW” 15%
Chevy Tahoe 7500 GTW 1000 Lbs Tongue Weight 13.30%
Avalanche 1500 7100 GTW 1000 Lbs Tongue Weight 14%

That's interesting, I hadn't heard that before.

BTW, welcome to Tripleplate.

I'm not real in the know about hitches but can't you just replace the hitch?

It has more to do with the physics of the vehicle.

Besides, VWoA says you void the warantee if you use any other hitch.

Gotcha, so is there any fixes planned or available?

RE Towing weakness:

They are in discussions with several of us. They appear to be going to rectify it somehow.

By the way, I was amused at the outpouring of emotional response generated by the factual observation of an engineering shortcoming.

The T-REg is an amazing vehicle. It just can't tow the specs they claimed cause of the hitch. :slap:

"Best SUV"? Talk about damning with faint praise.....pretty much the equivalent of claiming to have the best smelling turd.

MT may be the best selling car mag in the US, but it is generally considered to be the car magazine for non-auto enthusiasts. I haven't read MT in years, but if I recall correctly only new models are eligible for the vehicle of the year award. Assuming you give any credence to MT's opinion, the Toureg is the best of the SUVs that are totally new this year. In other words, it had little or no competition.

In any case, VWs are among the least reliable new vehicles one can buy, boasting quality on par with Kias and the like. I don't care how good it is, an unreliable $40,000 car is inexcusable.
