View Thread: An A/C question...

Well,
Yesterday, it was about 105*. In the shade. Damn hot. Anyway, I was wondering how hard is it on the A/C to run it while sitting in traffic? I would imagine that things heat up quite a bit under there without proper air flow. What can go wrong?

On two of my cars, an aux fan will kick on whenever the A/C is on. The others arent like that...

Whats up?

Keep an eye on the temp guage, since running the AC puts an extra load on the car. Most new cars can tolerate the AC running for quite a long time while sitting in traffic.

The worst thing would be overheating your engine. As long as you keep your eye on the temp guage, and shut off the AC if it starts to climb, you'll probably be fine.

If your fan doesn't come on when you switch the AC on, then it is designed to come on only when the temp reaches a certian point. If you never hear it come on, I'd have it checked.

seeing as how the ac requires some air movement across is condenser the fan should be coming on to help out, also to keep the engine cool while no air flow across it from moving.

Mr.Dave
I had an 86 Camry and hot to blast the heat with the windows down whenever it got hot for a week before I had the engine fixed. I added water and antifreeze, nothing helped.

And we don't have the pussy west coast heat... we have the real shit, with humidity :)

diesel_soot
Sounds good.

I had a compressor take a dump and start to smoke a few years back, because it was on in high heat, and low flow conditions...

An aux fan would probably be a good idea for any application in hot weather. It would be nice to be able to leave a car running for a moment at certain times, and not have to worry about it...

Hey Matt, I was wondering who Diesel soot was, because I had you as somebody I had referred over here.

As you may know, the compressor (still not sure if it is that yet) crapped out on me as well, during the winter.

diesel_soot
Hey...

I guess that they can go out if you dont "exercise the gaskets" during winter months...

I use mine during the winter quite frequently...

Sub Urban
I don't live in California, it does go down to -40 over here you know. ;)

If you use your defogger, you use the compressor.
