View Thread: Let's see your lawnmowers.

Ok. I would like to see your lawnmowers. My lawnmower is a hunk of junk. I had to replace the handle on it. Replaced one of the wheels and three of the wheels. It consumes more gas than an SUV. Just after this picture was taken, I removed the air filter, started it up, and poured water in the carb while it was running at high throttle. It's been running a little rough, missing, blowing a little bit of black smoke, and it puffs a flame out of the muffler when I turn it off. Later on, I'll do the "water in the carb" trick when the engine is good and hot and see if that does any better. It seemed to do better when I did it earlier today.

Maybe somebody can tell me what year this mower might be. A friend gave it to me.

Dreamn
i'll get a pic of my beat up lawnmower tomorrow. Its an old honda, in fact, its older than me, :D

Rotary Boy
my mower is cooler than all of those, it's a sachs 1976 rotary combustion engine lawn mower that I bought on ebay 5 years ago, I rebuilt the little thing and it runs like a champ. 6Hp 1 rotar, very nice as far as lawn mowers go, although it does use more gas than most mowers and it does spit fire like a dragon

Rotary Boy
notice the rotar logo on top

Rotary Boy
you all know you wish you had that

ahahn
Damn, a rotary lawnmower. That is the shit. Does it have a turbo??

Rotary Boy
not yet :)

when we bought the building that is our shop it had a street cleaning machine in it that came with the building. the thing had a 1.2Liter turbo inline 3. needless to say we boosted it and stripped it to the frame. then the best part is a guy bought it from us for 200bucks. we actually autoXed it once, but becuase it had no roof, doors or cab of anykind we got yelled at my the sanctioning body who took one close look at it and laughed and let us do another run or two

ahahn
I still can't get over the rotary lawn mower. Is the sound noticeably different than a conventional piston one? Is the engine made by Mazda?

Rotary Boy
nope it's a sachs engine. and it doesn't sound a thing like a regular lawn mower, sounds alot like a table saw with a really fast mechanical ticking sound going on too.

kcg795
That is so neat. A rotary engined lawnmower. WOW! Who'da thunk it?

Next time I work on the lawn, maybe tomorrow, I'll get the engine good and hot, then pour water in the carb while it's running to clean it out. When I run the engine when it's almost dark, sparks fly out of the muffler. Kinda freaky though. My mower scares the shit out of me. But, I'm getting a little more brave now. I've GOT to get this lawn mowed. I think the magneto is going tits up too. It likes to miss. For this huge yard we have, we're gonna try to get a riding lawnmower. This one guy has an old one for $225. My brother also has a friend that has 3 riding lawnmowers. Probably might try borrowing one.

Rotary Boy
you know whats also really cool, some guy in boulder has a riding lawn mower that he has set up for lawn mower circle track racing and it runs on methanol. pretty rediculous. I would love to actually cut grass with somthing like that

Sia Bani
Damn, on methanol? That guy is insane, considering the extreme flamability of METHANOL!!

RB, your rotarmower is cool.

Rotary Boy
it cuts grass real well too. like whenever it completly dies I don't know what I am going to do as far as lawn mowers go. I have never had mower that was this smooth and would just demolish mole hills and thick patches of grass with no problem. I don't know how much longer it is gonna last though, she is starting to get the shakes, like when it is just sitting there on not actually mowing anything it is starting to feel like somthing is offbalance. and if thats the case it's gonna torque it'self apart one of these days

kcg795
I wanted to transfer the engine of my lawnmower to another frame I had, but the damn blade won't come off. I busted a 9/16ths socket trying to unbolt that son-of-a-bitch. That blade also needs sharpening. Usually, you would have to take the blade off to sharpen it. But looks like I'll have to borrow a dremel and sharpen it while it's attached and pray to God that it's balanced.

masestylez
Thats fucking sweet!

Any other rotary-powered toys?

No, not those...

Murray lawn-mower
Ferrari Red
Adjustable suspension
White racing wheels
3.5 hp, 20" blade, side-discharge

Who's your daddy now, huh?
:D

Mr.Dave
Here's mine... bought it a few years ago when I was mowing lawns on the weekend... pretty nice, made around $150 on the weekend and needed a good lawn mower...

"Snapper's commercial walk behind mowers are quick, powerful and agile. This mower features a 5-Hp Kawasaki engine and a 21" Hi-Vac cutting deck. Also featured is a 6-speed disc drive with smooth-turn differential. Three-in-one convertibility allows you to mulch or side discharge with available accessories."

mustangdriver
I had the side discharge once after a particularly rough trip to Tijuana.

wow...its got Hi-Vac...that adds alot of hp right there...have you put any body kits or underbody lighting on it yet...? :bigbounce

Mr.Dave
I did too on the way home from a vacation (turns out I really am lactose intolerant!)

I'll bet nobody wanted to be a "walk behind" then...

Mr.Dave
I have NO2 that I put in my pocket, when I hit a dead bird or a nest of rabbits, that extra kick grinds them up real nice like.

As for a body kit I'm getting ground effects to make the grass about golf course length along with a remote starter. More mods to come...

I got one like that but I love a rotary powered one. They have rotary engines for model airplanes too.

kcg795
I think I blew my engine. I did the "water in the carb" trick while it was running at full throttle. All seemed fine until I had to tilt the lawnmower back to tighten some bolts because the engine was loose. After I did that, this grey shit was all around the carb and on the fuel tank. I opened up the oil filler. It's all grey in there too. So, the water must've passed the piston rings. So, I think the piston rings are shot. It won't run right either. It won't run at very high speeds. I'm gonna try changing the oil and clean out the carburetor and see if that makes it run better. Blown piston rings can cause it to run crappy too. I think the water in the carb trick must've finished them off.

Here's my lawnmower, it keeps going and going and going, :bigbounce

So it's not powered by a telephone?

kcg795
I changed the oil in my lawnmower today. Running a little better, but it's still running slow. I checked the governor and it has the actual throttle mechanism at full blast. It's also missing. I think the magneto is going bad.

Only if the damn video store has the widescreen version. If not, I'll buy a copy at Wal Mart.

FabUlous
does anyone have any competition mowers with shaved handles and keyless entry? i think that looks so cool

kcg795
I got the lawnmower all apart today. There's a shitload of carbon buildup. I think it's running WAY too rich. There's also a break in the wire coming from the magneto to under the flywheel. The from under the flywheel, another wire comes out and connects to the kill switch. I now have to fix that wire and hope that fixes the misfire.

Since I think an "out-of-adjustment" carburetor might be the cause of the EXCESSIVE gasoline consumption and the heavy carbon build up, which way to I turn the screw to make it LEAN? If I lean it up a little, that should make the exhaust a little cleaner and use less gas.

I have a late 50s Jacobson 2-cycle lawnmower that still runs like a swiss watch. It is a little used looking. I am thinking of trying to restore it. It is a 2 and 1/4 horse 2-cycle. One of the orange and white ones. We also have a 1962 Farm King rotetiller with the origianal Briggs and Strattan engine. It too a little used looking but it runs like new.

kcg795
This guy, who owns a Lawnmower "Fix-It" shop has an old Craftsman Lawn Tractor for $250. It looks like a mower from the late 70s, early 80s. I started it up and it runs pretty good. The guy said the carb had to be adjusted because it sounds a little "poppy" right now. But hey. That'd be great for this great big yard we have.

My mower doesn't run and has a flat tire, but the personal license plate makes it cool.

kcg795
One of my neighbors just gave me one of his old Self Propelled lawnmowers. It had no oil in it. So, I had to add some to get it started. It's a little sluggish. Don't have very much power. I'll play around with it later. Maybe the governor isn't working right. It bogs down when I start mowing. I'll take a picture of it after I get the power back from the engine.

mustangdriver
Man kcg really likes lawnmowers :bigbounce

kcg795
I just worked on the engine of that lawnmower the neighbor gave me. I cleaned the cylinder out and the valves. I took a wire brush to the head and cleaned that off. I tried a different spark plug. I also put on another magneto. It ain't missing or anything. It just don't have any power. I can't get ANY power out of it. I even shortened the governor spring a little so it can rev a little faster. Little more power, but when I start mowing short grass with the wheels set at HIGH, it bogs down. I have to stop, let the engine speed up again, then go again. If I don't do that, the engine dies. Why is this thing not getting any power?

montecarlolsus
What shape is the engine in itself. Do a compression test. I had one so worn out that it wouldnt cut grass if it got the least bit too long.

montecarlolsus
Has anyone ever run across one of the late 50s Jacobsons I talked about earlier?

kcg795
Ok. Gotta picture of the mower the neighbor gave me. I believe the piston rings ARE shot. It runs better when it's cold and adding oil to the gas seems to help quite a bit also. Before I put the oil in the gas, it would take a long time to get up to speed and it would sputter. After, it runs so much better. Still not the power I want, but it works. I'm slowly, but surely, getting this lawn mowed.

kcg795
Oh. Did I mention that THIS mower is RWD? :bigbounce

kcg795
Ok. Just changed the oil from SAE 30 to SAE 40 and used an Oil Treatment Gel Additive. It's working a lot better now. I'm still mixing some of the oil with the gas though. But, it's sure working a lot better. I put it down one notch and I'm mowing the lawn again. Looks like I'm getting it down to the height I want.
