View Thread: what do you run for your car stereo

FabUlous
i think someones already done this but i figger why not do it again because i plan on putting a system into my car soon so for ideas and sheer curiosity what are you running?

a.) name the car
b.)name the reciever
c.)name the speakers
d.)name the subs
e.) name the amp
f.)i dont know how many this one would apply to on this board, but if you have neons or anything being run talk about that shizzat here:awf:

good audio makes the baby jesus go:woowoo:

Sia Bani
a)hoe
b)pioneer gm-oversized
c)Alpine 186 6.75" components-front
d)Kicker 4x10s rear
e)Single Jl Audio W3 12"
f)Alpine 5-channel (going to be swapped on tues hopefully with a kicker 5-channel)

FabUlous
how do you like the JL........i was thinkin about 2 w6v2 10" at an angle for the hatch

Sia Bani
That would be badass. Depends on your needs though. In the hoe, since its an open trunk, a single w6 10 would be perfect for my current needs. You might want 2 since youre young and want to bump. I'd go for two 12s if you just want loud though

FabUlous
thats the thing, i dont want sheer wattage i want sound quality over kick ass power, but i know i can get power AND control with jl's and thats why the biggest ill go is 10

Arthur Dent
a.) 74 Triumph Spitfire
b.)some cheap ass Cdn Tire tape deck
c.)see above
d.)none
e.)none

I can actually only hear the radio when stopped and idling. Otherwise engine/exhaust and wind noise drowns it out even at max volume (admitted pathetice max volume)

masestylez
a piece of shit panasonic tape deck and two little speakers next to the door hinge (my car didn't even come with 6x9s). Stereo is the least of my worries for that car

FabUlous
yeah, i dont exactly have the cash to drop a cosworth turbo into my escort so i am gonna make it BUMP!

masestylez
Save up ;) It's worth it!

mustangdriver
Mustang
Mach 460 Stereo

:pd:

It's pretty damn good for stock. And 460 Watts ain't bad. I also love the speed sensitive volume. When I go faster and it gets louder, the volume goes up. Fantastic! It's also nice that when I come to a stop, I'm not blaring out the car next to me :D

masestylez
Thats actually a pretty damn cool feature

mustangdriver
Not bad for a 'merican brand :pd:

masestylez
My thoughts exactly. :)

eric rxb
I valeted a stick mustang GT tonight. Damn it sounded sooo nice.

mustangdriver
I actually turn the stereo down to hear it sometimes :D

eric rxb
I love the WRX ad where they do that.

I've got a Clarion DB325 deck and 6.5" speakers in back, 4s in front (didn't wanna cut any metal!). No amp or sub, didn't feel the need or have the money.

All the speakers are Clarion BTW.

ahahn
Just got all the goodies for the stereo I am putting together for my car. I have a Pioneer head unit, Rockford Fosgate 10 inch sub, Rockford Fosgate Punch amp, and 6x9 Rockford Fosgates in the back. Soon as I get home I will be installing this in my beast. Front speakers to come soon, they will most likely be Rockford Fosgate unless Crutchfield has some screaming deal on some other speaker that will fit.

Sia Bani
what kind of fosgate woofer do you have, that's the question!

ahahn
Nothing too fancy, just the Punch Z series 10 inch. Isn't the best sub out there, but it is good enough for me. I am not going for a boom boom system, just good clean sound at all the extremes.

Sia Bani
Z series...hm..never heard of that. Maybe I've been out of the fosgate loop. The crappy ones were xlc's "back in the day". As long as you don't have 15s in the cheaper brands, you really won't hear much of a difference if you aren't peaking it.

Rotary Boy
sound system?
16PSi, HKS dual vent II's, 2.0liters, three rotars, custom rolled 3+ inch exhuast, 7000+RPMS of the best sound system you can imagine

ahahn
It is an entry level sub, but my friend has one and it does have good sound.

Here is the link to it if you want to tell me if I got ripped off.

clicky (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-opLfjZwWtmL/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=575RFZ3410)

Here it is:

Sia Bani
RB :ghey: showoff.

Sia Bani
hahn, did you buy it off of crutchfield?

ahahn
Yes I bought everything from there. I got a good price on the head unit and the speakers. Probably could have done better on the sub, but I didn't bother, just threw it on the order.

Sia Bani
Cool, just next time...don't. :D There are a lot of cheaper sites out there.. like the one alpineboy mentioned. Where the hell is alpine anyway?

ahahn
Do they sell the stuff new though? I am so anal about that, I can't buy audio equipment used. If it is new, then I shall find a new supplier.

ahahn
Oh, and I would say that RB's sound system takes the prize for best overall thus far. Music is good, but we are all car enthusiasts at heart right. Nothing like a well tuned engine running through the gears.

Sia Bani
Ya, fuck used man. Of course they sell new. Only ebay has the shady factor involved. If they say new, it has to be new. If not, people would sue, etc.

Here's a Ebay cheap online site. http://www.ikesound.com/

The best way to do it is find a stereo shop, and bargain with them with ebay prices/online store prices, and beat them that way. That's what I did.

ahahn
Cool, thanks

hmmm, maybe I should look into adding another sub now, or at least getting those front speakers ASAP.

Sia Bani
yeah you should. They actually have my speakers on "sale" although they're still pretty expensive, depending on what you're looking for.

What size and price range are you looking at?

ahahn
I'm not sure off hand. I think the fronts are 4x6. If I could spend $40 or $50 for the pair that would be good.

Edit- although I could be convinced to spend more if the speakers are very high quality. Just trying to save some money for other expenditures too.

Sia Bani
4x6 huh? You're not going to get a lot of sound quality out of those. Do you have room to upgrade to a 5x7 you think?

So 25 bucks a speaker? I'll look around.

ahahn
I don't know if I can upgrade. My car is at home and I have my dad's truck right now to haul some stuff home from school. I will take a look when I get home, see if the extra room is there.

ahahn
Checking out Ikesound right now though. Good site.

Sia Bani
You know...I'd go with a 4 inch conversion, if not bigger.

http://www.ikesound.com/1024.htm

masestylez
My friends get damn near bargain basement prices on speakers and shit, so I might be getting something nice for $100, like fosgate subs and whatnot. It should be fun.

mustangdriver
I happen to find this today. Pretty cool

Top 10 Sound Systems in Cars Under $30,000 (http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/top10/55745/article.html?tid=edmunds.e.roadtests....Ford*)

1. 2002 Ford Mustang GT Premium 2dr Convertible (Visteon)
A Ford is the best? You better believe it. Although we had only limited seat time in this pony two-door, it was long enough for this sound system to part our hair without a comb. It's that good. And loud we mean, really loud. The GT Premium comes standard with this system, known as the Mach 460, which includes an in-dash six-disc CD changer, eight speakers, three amplifiers and 460 watts of total system power. If your ears aren't bleeding from the Mach 460, you can order the Mach 1000 (MSRP $1,295), which has six amplifiers and 1,140 watts of total peak power. But be forewarned: The neighbors will be ticked if you play this thing in your driveway.

FabUlous
purecaraudio.com has some pretty good prices, so i think ill get em online there when i go speakers/subs/amp, and just today i went to best buy and got myself a pioneer DEH-P3500 head unit...it dont play mp3's(i dont have a burner no biggie) but it has good sound shaping and i only got it for 180 puls 40 for a 4 year warranty through ebay which is AMAZING. everything but theft is kept under the warranty for four years, and the head unit made a huge difference in sound quality, even for a reciever.

Aquemini
A 5 1/4 will fit in a 4x6. I recommend this as my brother put MB Quart 5 1/4's in the doors of his Altima when he had it. OnlineCarStereo.com and CBRStereo are also good sites to browse. My brother has worked as an installer for a few places and he and I have installed quite a few stereos. I have a few recommendations on brands if you're interested.

Sia Bani
Don't get quarts unless you're buying the "real" quarts. Anything cheaper than their high-product line isn't worth the price. But once you're paying a lot, they have the best speakers.

FabUlous
what do u know bout infinitys they seem pretty nice for quality

Sia Bani
Depends on the application.

kcg795
a.)1984 Toyota Van
b.)Fujitsu with seperate EQ
c.)Stock and shitty
d.)Roadmaster Tube Sub $20 from Wal Mart
e.)eq has sub out

This is the system I have for now. It's kinda temporary until I build up a new system. I really don't use it at all anymore. Sometimes, when I turn it on, it squeals really loud. I rewired the tape deck on to add an AUX in on it. So, if I wanna hook my MP3 player up, I pop a tape in and that enable it. It works ok. Not all that much power to run the sub, but it sounds a little better. My right front speaker is also blown and sounds like shit. Time for me to get a new system. This is what I want.

a.)Still 1984 Toyota Van because they are RWD and they ROCK!!
b.)Sony CDX-MP40 with MP3 capability
c.)Rockford Fosgate FRC4204 4" 2-way Speakers
d.)2 Rockford Fosgate RFZ3412\Punch Z 12" Component Subwoofers in bandpass box.
e.)Sony XM-2165GTX 165W x 2 Car Amplifier
f.)Lightning Audio LS10-03 Strike 1.0-farad Capacitor (well shit, my headlights even dim with the stereo I got now. Alternator needs to go back to the shop anyway. It wasn't rebuilt right)

Well, there's my wishlist. I also have a few other things I want, like XM radio. I plan on only replacing my FRONT speakers, unless I can figure out how to get to the REAR speakers without breaking anything. I also heard from another Toyota Van owner that the fronts can take 4x6 ovals if I do a little cutting on the inside. I might consider that. Supplying power to the amp should be easy, since my battery is in the floor behind the engine compartment in the back seat area. I'm also gonna use new wire for the front speakers.

Rotary Boy
the bose soundsystem in my audi is pretty badass. I am not really sure why it isn't on that list(i guess cause it's an 01) but it has a very nice system in it. the bose package is like a $3K option so you get a pretty impressive hunk of sound out of it the sond quality is excellent and it can churn out some seirous volume

mustangdriver
Probably because it's the best sound systems for under $30,000

Way to pay attention Sparky ;)

:pd:

kcg795
Bose systems sound ok, but I wouldn't waste my money on them. IMO, there are MUCH better sounding systems out there for half the price, or even 1/4 the price. If a car comes with a Bose system, that's fine.

eric rxb
Personally I like the bose systems because they are very subtle. Alot of aftermarket systems are really flashy and stupid looking, but the bose ones look alot like factory. Same with Blaupunkt

He has been working like crazy on the weekends and sleeps during the week after school.

Sia is right. I heard that MB Quart was bought out by Rockford not too long ago and that only there expensive models were the only speakers that are actually any good. That is why my brother dropped over 300 dollars on a pair of 5 1/4 coaxials. That's ridiculous in my opinion but to each his own. The only advice i can offer is that your stereo is only as good as your weakest component(s). That pretty much applies to anything though.

AlpineMan86
Yea lexus is right..all i've been doing latley is work and school... no time for anything else... Ive been working crazy hours latley..but at least I got to drive some realllly nice fancy cars (ferrari 355, '02 911 turbo, 50th anniv vette, subaru wrx etc) soo yeahh i'm a happy man.. i got a pic of me in a convertible carrera somewhere.. i'll post it as soon as i find it.. :pd:

I have a 1994 Honda Civic EX Coupe. There are two front 6" speakers and two tweeters up front. Right now they are the stock speakers (which was an option). This summer, I plan on buying either Infinity References or Kappas for the 6.5"s depending on how much money I have. In the back, there are two 6.5" References that I installed about two months ago. Now if I have a lot of extra money, I might buy an amp for the four 6.5"s. I was looking at an Alpine amp that runs about 50-70 watts continously, which isn't half bad.

a.)97 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24
b.)Pioneer DEH-3400
c.)Polk audio 4x6s in front and fosgate 6x9s in the back but they aren't connected and I plan on selling them
d.) Resonant Engineering HCs 12"
e.) Resonant Engineering RE35s, 2 of them they do about 2000w each at 1ohm

Right now my car is about high 140s to 150db. I need a job to redo my electrical system and get a nice set of components. Maybe even an Eclipse deck if I can afford it.
