View Thread: TDI questions

What year did VW start using the TDI in North America? I know they have always had a diesel Golf/Jetta, but when was the TDI put to task in those cars?

What year did VW start manufacturing the Jetta in Mexico? I assume it was manufactured in Germany, alongside the Golf, prior to Mexico.

Mr.Dave
I believe the official Tdis came out somewhere in the late 90's. I've seen the Passat, Jetta and Golfs with TDI engines in them. A good place to look would be www.tdiclub.com and just check in the past discussions. By the way, I'm new here and have a 2001 VW Golf GL TDI... wonderful car. Feel free if you have anymore questions and have a great day!

Mr.Dave
Haha, whoops! Forgot the second part of the question. The 97-00 Jetta's and 97-99 Golfs were mainly made in Mexico to my knowledge. Recently the Golfs have been made in Brazil and have parts from Mexico, I think the same goes for Jettas as well. It is disputed somewhat that when some were made in Mexico, their elecrical systems were somewhat faulty for a few. Improvements over the past 2 years have accounted for less difficulties and better resale value (top in their class). Personally my Golf was imported from Germany, and doesn't have any problems as of yet. Geeze, I'm yammering on! Sorry!

The Jetta wagon is still made in Germany as well. Unless my salesman lied to me

Mr. Dave, you're the man!

What is the VIN code for Germany? (Prelude, if the 1st # in your VIN is 3 your car was made in Mexico).

So, they made Golf's and Jetta's in Mexico since '97 and currently the Golfs are made in Brazil. How did you get one from Germany? Is it just the TDI's made in Germany?

By the way, your car is the one I want! I was thinking of a '97/'98 Jetta TDI (they didn't put the TDI in Golfs till '99). Buying used would enable me to afford (and justify) modifications. The Upsolute chip is supposed to up torque to 230 ft.lb! and hp from 90 to 125. Next would be suspension...

I was specifically asking about the TDI (as opposed to VW's prior TD) as the TDI's engine is easily moddable through chip and injectors.

TD = Turbo Diesel

TDI = Turbo Direct Injection (no precompression chamber, noise is minimized through precise computer control)

Thanks Felix! I'll check it out tonight.

Ones that I know offhand:

1 -- USA
2 -- Canada
3 -- Mexico
4 -- USA
5 -- ? seen on a few Nissans... Xterra
J -- Japan

I imagine Germany would start with an "F" from FRG

I believe that Italy is a "Z"

See below for a print screen of how VIN's work:

Very interesting! I don't think I was aware of that.

I did some quick searching and evidently the Passat, Jetta Wagon, and Toureag are built in Germany. The rest of the bunch are built in Mexico and Brazil.

Thanks!! I just checked the VIN # and the first 5 letters are WVWPB... hmmmmm. I got it from the dealership exactly a week ago today. Wonderful car! The girls think it's "cute", and everytime I get into it I find out another new feature. As far as getting one, they're hard to come by someplace (especially a two door like mine). But a few weeks ago I happened to come across a used one at an Import car dealership. They wanted $16 on it plus the trade, my step-father who used to be a used car salesman got it down to $12,500. (Gotta love that!)
:) Also, if you haven't already, although you probably have, check out www.tdiclub.com .... great place with a lot of friendly people who'll tell you everything about everything. Good luck finding one, and be sure to keep in touch and tell me if you have any leads!

Good deal!

I'm already at tdiclub, under the same name as here and everywhere else...

Check out my previous post on what VIN's mean... I'd imagine that the first letter in yours, "W", represents "West Germany." The next 2, "VW" would represent the manufacturer, and so forth...
