6,100 Volkswagen customers already looking forward to summer in the open-topped New Beetle

"Hello Sunshine” is in strong demand: all you do is open the soft top and push the rain clouds away - in the New Beetle Cabriolet. Launched in Germany on February 21, 2003, Volkswagen already has more than 6,100 orders for this model. The run on this convertible is like the crowds that descend on the ice cream kiosk when the first warm spring days arrive. Catch that first breath of summer air - the electro-hydraulic soft top opens in only 13 seconds, after which it's "Hello Sunshine”. This catch phrase sums up the new model and reflects the attitude to life that its enthusiasts favour; in a word, top-down motoring style. It may not be a new concept, but the New Beetle Cabriolet interprets it in a new, fascinating way.

I hope this helps VW's floundering sales with the New Beetle. I've always liked the car and resent the chick car stereotype that has been assigned to it. It pisses me off. I think that they look great in silver with the optional 5 spoke rims. Just something Porsche 993 about the looks. I wish they would make a more aggressive version of the turbo s complete with RSI type whale tale.

The new cabrio should help spark new interest in the car, I hope the model stays for awhile.

I love the RSI beetle. I would love to see a badass beetle in the US market! I always loved that one VW commercial where the guy beats the crap out of the competition in his Beetle Rally car after they all make fun of him. hehehe

I never saw that one. Was it blue? Karl Schieble campaigned a bone stock blue New Beetle the first year it was introduced and won the national title for the class. He sold it and I saw it last fall, it had hit a tree in the night stages the previous evening and was all smacked up. This was the same car used in the New Beetle magazine ads.

mustangdriver
I think it was blue, not sure though. The commercial was on back when the new beetle came out, it's been awhile.

I love the Mr. Blue Sky commercial.

VW New Beetle Cabriolet is actually the _only_ cabriolet from VW at the moment.

I think the most impressive aspect of the new beetle cabrio is the full 13 seconds it takes to hit 60mph.

I find the car as exciting as a Sebring convertible (not at all).

They should've at least put the 1.8t engine in there for the price they're asking.

mustangdriver
Motortrend says it's 11 seconds (not much better, but 2 seconds in zero to sixty terms is pretty substantial).

And I'm sure the 180hp Turbo will be in it soon. Besides the target buyer probably doesn't care.

The smallest engine in the NB Cab is a 1.4 litre 75 hp... rubberband-engine? :)

mustangdriver
We get the 115hp standard. :D

Here in Norway we get:

1.4 75 hp
1.6 102 hp
2.0 115 hp

My dad had a black beetle when it first came out. Kept it for one year, it was a great, fun ride and all....but you just get tired of it. He got off twice because the cops that pulled him over loved the ride.

Hey, I didn't mind...I learned how to drive stick in that puppy.

kak
How many americans "drive stick" btw?

mustangdriver
Not sure the percentage. I'm sure it's less of a percentage here than in Europe. There a lot of automatics over here :(

kak
We almost don't have anything but "stick". That's just fine by me! :)
