View Thread: Well, how about driveline config...

A-Tech
which do you like? =)

ahahn
Engine in front of me and power delivery behind me, please.

911GT2
Everything in the back for me.

Mid engine, rear wheel drive. You left out rear engined though.

911GT2
I'd change it if I could without getting rid of "batmobile"....

mustangdriver
Yeah, I was going to point out the 911 config was missing :D

I went engine in the front, drive wheels in the back.

911GT2
Fixed!

kcg795
Well, in my Van, I have the engine along with the front wheels under my ass, so, that would be Mid-Engine. It's also RWD, which is good. I like that configuration. It handles very well. The only flaw is that it's pretty hard to get to the engine without taking out the passenger seat and removing a panel, which is not that big of deal.

Mid/All

mmmmm......Murcielago

Engine belongs in the front, drive wheels belong in the rear.

eric rxb
Hard choice here. For the most part I'd have to go with front engine and either AWD or RWD. I think I'd lean more towards AWD because the perfect AWD system would be RWD and send power to the front wheels when needed

mrgokou
well considereing the batmoblie is rocket powered, and has the abilty to sustain flight... i choose that.

Sia Bani
I'm sorry gokou, I'm pretty sure it can't sustain flight.

I chose it too though..haha.

eric rxb
Yea, the batplane was completely seperate

mrgokou
no way.. it can sustain flight for a few seconds when it was needed u know...

Sia Bani
So it can "sustain" flight for a "few" seconds? That doesn't sound like much of a sustenance! :D

So you mean it got air for a bit...

kcg795
I see nobody has had the balls to vote "Front Engine Front Wheel". Get a few FWD loving teens, women, and old people in here, and then it'll get some votes. :D Heh, a lot of teens I talk to just love FWD.

lexus1581
I have a front engine, fwd car in my parents Honda Accord and it is alright as a daily driving auto but it could be better. Also my parents have a front engine, rwd drive car which i dont like because its a wagon. BTW, i voted rear engine, rwd like in Porsches because of better weighting and plus it looks cool to have an engine in the trunk.

mrgokou
ther are some good FWD cars out there KC.

kcg795
My mom's Concorde is ok. It's FWD, but the engine is mounted is it was a RWD. My dad's Lumina has the V6 in sideways like other FWD cars do. But, if you put a V6 or a V8 engine in sideways, it's hard to get to the other side to change the spark plugs. For a FWD car, I like the idea of having the engine mounted as it was a RWD. Both my mom's and dad's cars handle ok. I think the torque steer is worse in my mom's car though. One thing I like about RWD, such as in my van, is that I feel myself "GAIN" traction when I give it more gas around the corners. I just love it.

mrgokou
yes RWD cars are practically the best.. but there are some great FWD cars too.. to name the best(IMO):

The Integra Type-R

'nuff said

eric rxb
For most people FWD is alot more practical and reasonable than RWD. Plus most of the time it's alot cheaper to build FWD cars than RWD.

its almost impossible to put a V engine in the way you do for RWD if its FWD. In fact, I would say it is, unless theres like one car thats not. where u gonna put the drive shafts?

eric rxb
Transversly mounted engines do make it more diffucult to work on a car, esp when most engine compartments are fairly crowded anyway.

Isn't the original Mini Cooper one of the first cars that had a transversely mounted engine and FWD?

Mitsu managed AWD with a transverse engine, now of course that transmission royally sucked and thats a large reason why, but still. . . its doable.

A-Tech
i knew there was some random ass car like that

911GT2
If you're talking about DSMs, second gear was all that really sucked, the rest of the tranny was decent.

eric rxb
Plus DSM's Rock hardcore

A-Tech
bah, dsm's only rock hardcore because of their awd...

Rotary Boy
I chose Front engine, Rear wheel drive. it's just what i am most comfortable with. although rear engined rear wheel drive is pretty nice too

Rotary Boy
and even the FWD DSM's rock it out. as long as it is trubo and has a 4g63 it will kick ass

Well, when I look under the hood, the engine is mounted like it would in a RWD car. But when I get in the car, get on some gravel, then floor it, the front tires spin. So, it must be possible. They also had a thing on Hi Rev Tuners at one time and this one guy with a FWD drag racer had his engine mounted as if it was a RWD car, but it was FWD.

FabUlous
for a first car im leanin toward a NA DSM because of low price and reliability.........not to mention i have some inane attraction to hatches

Hi Rev Tunerz is Garbage. Absolute garbage. I wouldn't listen to a thing they said.

kcg795
The way they do their show is stupid anyway. They go like "While we're installing the fuel rail, have a look at this." I mean, you hardly get to see them do all the work. And you have to watch this other bullshit. And Speed shows way too many fucking commercials. I watch Hi Rev just to see these 2 guys rice up a Honda or something. I know it's a dumb show, but some of it's good, I guess. The good shows, IMO, are Horse Power TV and Hot Rod TV. At least you get a good idea of what their doing.

eric rxb
They are alright show, definatly more technical than Hi Rev Tunerz , but they still do some stupid stuff. Like when Horsepower TV did a civic buildup. I don't think many people tune into that show to see imports.

A-Tech
ive watched all of those shows, and none of em really interest me, they are just selling you shit the whole time

hah! those thing were garbage, the only thing that was any good on them was the bearings and actual gears themselves, and even then they, like you said, had 2nd gear tooth problems. The lubrication on them was garbage, it takes aftermarket jets to keep them running, they had a ton of friction and created more heat then a 700R4 in the gobi at noon.

The synchros were weak, and although they changed the design for the 2Gs it still didn't fix it. Input and output shafts were far too weak for the amount of forces seen in a AWD car, but i cant really blame mitsu since those problems dont come up until a good 16G and a hard launch, still the whole design has alot of friction, a ton of heat and poor build quality, easily one of the worst trannies i've ever had the misfortune of owning or working on.

911GT2
Yeah I think the problem lies within the sheer amount of them with an MBC with a 16G. Do that to any transmission without beefing it up and see how they hold up.

But in general the only thing that consistently breaks is the second gear (the other gears have two synchros).

A-Tech
I hear most mitsu were garbage for a long time, so much so that the local mitsu dealer here in a2 actually stopped carring anythign mitsu and went to vw audi porsche

911GT2
Alot of it was unreliable because people were going insane on the engine. The 4G63 was extremely overbuilt, but that doesn't mean everything else is...
