View Thread: Ok, FWD has gone TOO far!

kcg795
My brother works for this one lady once and a while and he called the other day saying that there was something hanging down from Mom's car. It was an air damn, so, after my dad ripped it all the way off, we went out in the back yard where my brother was working. He was mowing the lawn. Well, I gotta close look at the lawnmower. It's a self propelled, BTW. IT'S FWD!!! I'm like GEEEEZE! WTF has this world come to? You don't put FWD on a self propelled lawnmower. It won't go anywhere. The best self propelled mowers are the ones that are RWD. Not FWD. I really can't believe it. Maybe the manufacturers of that lawnmower made it FWD because it is "GOOD IN THE SNOW."

I don't really think it would matter if a lawn mower. RWD matters the most in performance vehicles and in large trucks that need to haul or pull large amounts of weight

kcg795
Well. I does matter, actually. On a lawnmower, there's not much weight in front. But in the back end, there's all kinds of weight. For one, because of the handles that hang way back. Secondly, the operator's hands. I've operated a FWD lawnmower before. Believe me, they sucks. They sort of help move the lawnmower, but the RWD mowers move a lot better and the wheels don't tear up the grass trying to get some traction.

lexus1581
hehe and i thought this thread was about the Impala SS and Monte Carlo SS. Sorry to hijack it but thats funny. I dont know shit about mowers. Elaborate.

ahahn
How 'bout them newfangled all wheel drive mowers? I hear that they is real good for cuttin' some grass.

I think Subaru makes them, or maybe Porsche? Not too sure there.

eric rxb
Wasn't it Audi, they have quattro rite?

kcg795
I took apart a friend's rototillier and lawnmower and cleaned the valves and cylinder out as a tune up. She nearly shit when I told that was the first time I've taken apart a 4 cycle engine. She didn't panick, but hadda weird look on her face. I told her it was ok because I basically KNOW haw a 4 cycle engine works and I've taken apart an old "non-working" engine before, so, I knew what I was getting into. I usually do my own engine work on the lawn equipment. Weedeaters are fun too. Amazingly, I can take the 2 cycle engine completely apart, reassemble it, and it'll run just fine.

ahahn
Ahhh yes, stupid me. I think it was the Quattro.

kcg795
I wouldn't be surprised if they started making Buses and Semis FWD just to be "GOOD IN THE SNOW" ;)

ksaile
WTF is going on in this thread? You guys are discussing the virtues of lawn mower engineering?:nope:

kcg795
Nothing wrong with that. :bigbounce

Maybe its a Honda lawnmower with a VTEC engine.

kcg795
Heh, could be. NOS anyone? Mower bogging down through the wet, thick grass? NNNAAAAAWWWWSSSSSSS!!!!!

Considering that it's an automobile forum, then by definition there is something wrong with it.

kcg795
Other Transport
Motorcycles, bicycles, or even lawnmowers.

Says right there before you enter that forum. So, it must be appropriate.

eric rxb
OK. Fine. It's still pointless

kcg795
And why should I care?

Mr.Dave
Lemme comment a little on this...

I used to own a small lawn mowing service in the area and started with a 1970s TORO lawnmower whom I affectively named "Bessie". She was front wheel drive because that's when they started making self-propelled mowers. It was basically a switch that you turned on either on the handle or on the engine casing itself.

While the front propelled might be weird it did serve useful in flat land. For instance if I was mowing a flat front lawn and got to the end of the row all I had to do was lift the front wheels, manouver it around and continue on my way. Bessie was a great mower, she lasted for 2 years and we've made many many hundreds of dollars together.

One day her front wheels fell off, she started smoking and caught fire in an old man's backyard. This is how she met her demise. :(

My next mower was an older Snapper, which I named "Killer". We recieved it from my grandfather, he passed away from his 4th heart attack... while mowing the lawn. Killer was a great lawnmower and my dad took it away when my folks got divorced.

I decided to be a man... stepped up to the plate and bought a quality mower for my family. She's a 2001 commerical grade Snapper lawnmower with a Kawasaki engine! (Suck my balls Briggs & Stratton!) Wonderful little machine, and of course rear wheel drive, although no key start, I gotta pull the bitch's cord.

Next to driving my car, lawn mowing and house maintance is a good thing. I love firing up the ole mower, weed eating, edging the lawn and taking a seat in the patio chair out front with a beer admiring my work and thinking about life, (along with how incredibly dorky I am) ;)

kcg795
Hey, sounds like you had it made. I guess the FWD mowers do have some kind of advantage and they do help a little. They just don't move very well when the grass gets bumpy and slippery.

Lawnmower I have now is one with the handle bar type handles. That's falling apart. The governor is tweaked a little to get a little more power from the engine. And it screams at full throttle too. Sparks also fly outta the muffler when it gets hot too. Now that we're at a house with a huge lawn, I'm hoping to get a riding lawnmower soon.

TURBOZ
but in the end, no matter how much you tweak it, it's still a lawn mower.....:banghead:

kcg795
True. ;)

Dave wouldnt that be weed smoking?
I never mowed a lawn in my life but i always wanted to ride one of those things.

Sia Bani
Exactly, this is other transport. You can talk about riding "roomba the robot vaccuum" for all I care.

I actually found this thread quite amusing.
 kcg.

kcg795
Thanks Sia. It's also amusing to make fun of lawnmowers, or describe other units sounding like lawnmowers.

HAHA! Nah, gave that up a few years ago :pd:

It's always nice to have a beer and see the freshly cut grass you just mowed.

Or in your case to light up a J and see the freshly cut ass you just plowed... man, I hope that guy's okay!

Just playin buddy :smoke:

I used to have a FWD R/C car. It pretty much, sucked. I don't really remember how it was set up. I think only 1 Front Wheel turned. It didn't steer to well either. I think it steered by speeding up that wheel to turn one way, and slowing it down to turn the other. I remember when I put it in reverse, it would go around in circles because of that one wheel that only turned. I'm not sure if my memories are accurate. This was a long long time ago. Like, 10 years ago. I've always prefered the RWD R/C cars. I also love playing with them on wet linolium. OMG, that is so fun to do. Get a good speed, slam the lever in reverse and slam the steering to one way at the same time and do a night 180 on the bathroom floor. Then do a burn-out. :bigbounce

kcg795
Ok. I think I'm going crazy now. I just had this weird dream that I met a kid on a bike and his bike was FWD. The pedels were in the same position, but it had this special chain going to the front tire so it'll be able to turn as well.
