View Thread: Kicker subs

What do you guys think about the square kicker subwoofers. Are they good compared with others for the same price?

Thanks a lot.

Sia Bani
Same price? They're usually more expensive. If I were to buy a woofer over, I'd buy one of the solobarics! Great woofers, and they're usually equivalent to one size bigger compared to the round ones.

Basically, I have a Jl audio w3 12inch right now. I'd buy the 10 inch solobaric to get the tightest 12 inch woofer on the market.

AlpineMan86
hows the bass quality on the kickers compared to round subs?
do they sound better/worse?

Les /Vipers Rule
Square subs are more of a gimmick than anything else. Round subs wil perform the best and stand up to the riggors of sound pressure better. Kicker is an alright brand. Solobarics are maybe their best al around sub, They kick but and handle lots of power.

Yeah, they always seemed like a new gimmick more than anything else.

Kicker squares are crap. The sound quality is poor, I owned them. They are loud yes, but distorted. Remember. sound waves are in circles (afaik)

eric rxb
sound waves propagate spherically. sorry i've been studying physics since 4PM

AlpineMan86
what do u guys think its the best sounding sub for a reasonable price on the market?

masestylez
Fosgates are coming down in price. Just don't buy Sony, for the love of go just say NO

AlpineMan86
no way in hell im buying sonys lol :awf:

The lord blesses you my child :)

AlpineMan86
are the alpine subs any good for the price?

I really like the sound of the solobarics. Les' posts totally contradicts itself when he says they're a gimmick, but they're the best.

They surely are not "distorted" when properly installed. I don't think some of you know what distortion means.

The solobarics are really good in small spaces, requiring a smaller box.

If you are going to go round, look at Jl Audio w6s. Those are :badass:

JLs are nice for sure. I still stand by my opinion that Kickers are pieces of shit.

I just recently switched from a JL W0 to a 10" Kicker solobaric round sub.

I was hoping the kicker would kit harder and sound better, and I had to change my box (smaller) to fit the dimensions of the kicker.

End result........ The JL was cleaner and took more power before distorting, and the kicker hits only slightly harder.

I liked the JL better. But changing the box agains would be a pain in the ass, so I'll stick with the kicker for now.

Real benefit of the kicker square config is that you can build a wall of speakers with less wasted space.

Now the speakers that are really gimmicks are the ones shaped in other ways - octagon, hexagon, etc. Although I do think Xtant released a hexagon shaped sub that is probably good.

I was really into car stereo's awhile back. It's pretty fun when you learn to do some of it yourself. But now I'd rather spend the money on making the car faster. Besides, all that equipment makes the car heavier :D hehehe

I still think it's pretty cool though.

AlpineMan86
Yea... Im starting to get into car audio a lot... Pretty interesting stuff hehe.. Well anyway, thanks for the replies guys.

Sony makes alot of high quality products--speakers just don't really happen to be one of them. Their receivers aren't so bad compared to their mas market cmpetitors. (Most consider them a step down from Yamaha, Onkyo or Denon say, but compared to the more mass market brands they are decent) But you can say the same thing for other companies--Yamaha makes great receivers, but their speakers aren't so great (well, their old YST subs were decent for the money, but otherwise...).

In most cases you can't really find one company that makes great receivers and also makes great speakers. Just seems to be the nature of the beast.

Um no I never said Solos are gimmicks. I said square sub concept are gimmicks etc. The Solobaric has long been considered a great sub overall, esp. for toughnes and decent bass quality.

Alpines make very good subs overall that very rarely blow up. The better the model the better the performance.

Fosgates are overrated. They play loud but blow up too easily. I have never been happy with their overall build qaulity.

Sony car audio line is horrid. Their old ES line was nice I hear but the xplode stuff is just junk selling just because of the sony name. Fosgate is nice for loud but I don't care for their price or sound quality. Kicker is about the same but have some subs that sound decent (CompVRs) and others that are plain horrible (XPLs). The squares are near the middle they are loud but sound good. JL makes great stuff but theres better for about half the price.
