View Thread: Showdown in Tulare, CA

RSXDriver
I took some pics of my friends at the truck pull in Tulare yesterday. The quality may not be the total best, but hey...

Their names are Gary with the black truck, Nancy (his wife) with the maroon truck, and Anton with the white truck.

Pictures, of course, follow later. :green:

RSXDriver
Gary won a trophy for first place in his pulling class with 221.9 feet, and Nancy won that award she's holding for second place in the timed race with an 11.45 sec. 1/8 mile run.

Sia Bani
cool, but it says we need to sign in to view it. And that probably means registering...

RSXDriver
Registering is free at Imagestation. It'll allow you to store your pics online if you so desire to register.

No spam or anything will come your way. Imagestation is about the best way to get your pics online. Like I said, it's free.

:)

RSXDriver
I would've put all the pics up, but that'd take up too much space. Sorry about the registering thing. But again, it's free and risk free.

RSXDriver
Oh, and no, I'm not trying to sell Imagestation, if it looks that way. Just explaining that it's a lot easier to go there to see the album than it is to post them all on the site here.

:green:

Sia Bani
I'm lazy, so I went around registering...let's see if my idea works.

hey, rsx, just post one from your gallery, and I'll edit your post and screw around with the image tag and post the rest. Just tellme how mmany there are in total.

RSXDriver
Only the first pic shows.

There ya go. There are 22 pictures.

Hehe... Yeah, I was too lazy to post all the pics too. ;)

RSXDriver
Not all the pics are necessary, though, if it's too much. :green:

Sia Bani
do me a favor and post another one, preferably the one that comes right after this one...they made the tag a little trickier than they needed too.

Well hell... I could post all of 'em if you want.

Sia Bani

i saw that to be 1/4 at first....i was amazed. But now I'm more amazed, 11.45 in 1/8 mile??? that's insanely slow.

RSXDriver
Yeah, well she got second place... Don't forget, they're 3/4 ton and one ton pickup trucks.

I'm sure gearing has a lot to do with the difference between 1/8 and 1/4 mile times. She'd probably manage a 16+ second time in the 1/4.

First place in her class went to a GMC with the Duramax and 130 HP chip, in which a the guy ran 10 something.

In the extreme class, a guy ran under nine seconds.

Gary said it felt like more than 1/8 mile, though. In Sacramento, he ran the 1/4 in under 17 seconds with his big rig. He says Nancy can't beat him, and he has a manual, she has an automatic.

RSXDriver
And automatics usually do better with turbodiesels and heavy trucks.

RSXDriver
Oh, and they were also on dirt..... Traction?

Sia Bani
I understand. But you'd think that the gearing would make it a slower second 1/8 mile...wouldn't you think so? Specially with these torque monsters...

RSXDriver
Well... Think of it as the difference between 0-60 and 0-100. Different gears are involved between both. For instance, in my car, I only get to second gear for 0-60, and fourth for 0-100.

Some vehicles make up time in the second 1/4 mile. Gary wasn't doing so well shifting from second to third gear in his truck. But he made up for it toward the end.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with gearing. My car example wasn't a very good one... Different ballgame between my car and their trucks. Theirs have torque, mine doesn't. :green: Like I said, Gary did a 16+ second run in Sacramento, and that was a true 1/4 mile. Slow start, but once he gets up in the rev range, he probably makes up for it.

Babble, babble... Sorry.

Sia Bani
well, since I have a truck, and i figure the gearing is more like it than a car's gearing....I know that my 0-50 is great in first, then the gearing starts blowing from 50-60. That is where my time suffers the most. I'm not so sure about the rev thing though...they're not high revvers...

RSXDriver
No, they're not high revvers at all. In fact, their peak torque probably comes in around 1,000 RPM! Redlines are around 3,000 RPM. I rode home with Nancy last night. I was watching her tach and I was thinking that she's only 1200 less than my car is at 70. In my car, the engine is turning 3200 RPM. Probably a wide power band.

In that case, I'm really not sure. I just figure from their times yesterday and Gary's time in the 1/4, I took a pretty good shot. Something has to be made up somewhere, I would think.

Also, Gary did say it felt longer than 1/8 mile.

Sia Bani
whoa, redline at 3k?

RSXDriver
It's a 7.3 liter engine!

Sia Bani

and what about the viper...that's up there like 8.3 liters???...but what's its redline?

RSXDriver
Yeah, it's upwards of 6,000.

But it's also a gas motor vs. the Power Stroke Diesel. I think diesels characteristically rev lower.

Sia Bani
yea, that's true. but 3k is still amazing.

RSXDriver
Amazingly low, or high?

Sia Bani
low!

RSXDriver
Okay. I kinda wonder what the redline of the 6.6 liter Duramax is. I bet it's a bit higher... And then the Cummins is probably even higher.

RSXDriver
I bet they're not above 4,000, though.

Sia Bani
ya, that would make sense. I believe you obviously...it's just i didn't know that 3k could be the redline of a modern day truck, even if it is diesel.

RSXDriver
At 7.3 liters (Power Stroke), 6.6 liters (Duramax), and 5.9 liters (Cummins), these engines make as much, if not more torque than the Viper does with its 8.3 liters and two more (four more for the Cummins) cylinders.

And the new Power Stroke, at 6.0 liters, is supposed to blow them all out of the water.

Hehe... I'd like to see the Viper pull that sled! :green:

RSXDriver
Cute, lsr! :green:

So now I've seen everything.

whoops, never posted a pic before - let me try again

Maybe this'll work... I don't know why, though, since all I did was copy and paste from yours.

RSXDriver
Hehe... That's quite the clean edit there!! Took Gary's truck right out of it.

:green: Good job.

lsr78
I forgot the "/" at the end of [/img]. all better now

and I've been honing my skills @ work (it's slow this week)

RSXDriver
Ah, well I see you got it before I got a chance to put it up. :green:

I'm home now. I don't do this at work. ;)

Hey troy:
I thought ide chime in with some of my diesel knowledge. Ide imagine that the Rear wheel torque peaks ar around 2200 rpm for the diesels. Redline at 3500 for the PSD and Cummins, 4700 for the Dmax. However, the redline on the dmax can only be reached with engine breaking. When you floor it, there is a rev limiter that comes on about 3200 RPM. There is really no point in revving it up past 3k anyway...I have also heard that there have been some problems with the new 6l PSD. Probably just like the Dmax. Getting the bugs out...There are guys that are running 13-15 sec 1.4 mile times with chiped/propaned Dmaxes...

Rotary Boy
those trucks need the engine from our wrecker in them

actually I think some of the really powerfull desiel trucks(modded ones) have more to them than the DT466 in our wrecker, but I could be wrong.

466ci inline 6 turbo desiel. although I don't actually know the exact stats for it, I do know that it makes mad torque. with a full load it can easily be pushing 15 tons total weight and it does just fine in regular traffic. In fact I would go so fasr as to say it is fairly quick in the 0-45 MPh range expecially considering it is so freaking heavy. anyone know the stats on a 12 year old DT466 from a rollback flatbed?

RSXDriver
DT meaning Detroit?

Hey Matt! I didn't know you'd signed up here! Cool. But hey, thanks for making me look like a dummy! :fro: Just kidding.

DT466 stands for

diesel_soot
Hey, anytime...I just cant stand to see diesel misconseptions...:)

RSXDriver
But hey! I was right about the numbers coming in at lower RPM, though! :boxer:

diesel_soot
You were...Thats the best part of a diesel!

RSXDriver
I was reading Autoweek's article on the Opel Eco-Speedster with the diesel engine today. It might not be too terribly quick, but for a four cylinder, a 1.25 liter no less, that thing has some impressive numbers! It has 112 HP and 148 lb-ft of torque. Remember this is a 1.25 liter I4.

Then in the same article there was a Mercedes-Benz C30 CDI AMG with a 3.0 liter I5 putting out 231 HP and 399 lb-ft of torque. Now that's impressive!

Click here (http://www.autoweek.com/search/search_display.mv?port_code=autoweek&cat_code=specials&content_code=09960597&Search_Type=STD&Search_ID=919617&record=1) for the article. Quite interesting if you ask me.

:)

diesel_soot
Hey thanks, that is impressive...Can you imagine the mileage those diesels get? Not to mention the TORQUE in the Benz...
