View Thread: K&N Filter care

Anyone here have K&N filters? I have a K&N FIPK, have had it for two years, but i managed to get a free new filter this summer so i have never actaully cleaned one for its reusage. Is it a bitch to clean? Who's done it?

Just a hose-job I believe. Pretty useless things anyways.

They might give a large engine like yours an advantage, but people going around with sub-200hp engines will see about a 2 hp gain. Which no matter what they say, isn't a change you'll feel in the seat.

yea, but I have the actual FIPK setup, the whole intake. Not just a filter. And I know that your'e supposed to dip it in some special solution, reoil it, etc...but I was just wondering who's actually done it.

I find it to be a pain in the ass. You have to buy the "recharger" kit which comes with cleaner which removes the oil from the cotton element and oil to reoil the clean filter(Very important to do!). Just follow the directions on the kit. It's self explanatory. I don't like doing it though.

thjat's what I thought. A pain. If you remember, I posted once during the summer about how my intake rubber hose just RIPPED and I had them send me new parts. I told them it had damaged my filter too, which it sorta had, but it was still okay, so I got a brand new "bright pink" one. That's when you notice how dirty your old filter really is...

most every car made today has a cold air intake, the aftermarket ones just have no mufflers thats why its all noisy and such.

like 911 said, no feeling in the seat.

That sucks. I damaged mine a little one time. Nothing serious though. Just bent the mesh screen a bit. But I know what you mean about the new ones being pink. Even after I clean mine really well and reoil it, it still is dark red. They are a pain though.

well, I guess it filters more being trapped with dirt and all....

Yeah...I guess you're probably right.

Very true, but all those cars also are designed for maximum protection against particles entering, not power.

K&N I doubl you'll ever feel in a car. It takes a few ponies before you feel it. It just makes it breath better. Without good breathing, no matter how much gasoline you inject, you won't see the power.

"Grunt Grunt Grunt" More power

gotta get some headers to truly appreciate a new intake system, it allows a better exit for the air and creates a larger vacumn if I remember correctly and allows more air to be sucked in faster :tahoe:

How about a new intake manifold too? Or new cams, new anything.. an engine runs on air.

I definately feel the FIPK. With big inefficient engines like mine, freeing airflow in and out helps a lot.

obviously the filter alone won't do shit though.

except make noise.

if its a drop in filter, you won't even hear the noise.

A-Tech
true, but most people get the ones that replace the whole airbox.

raska
A drop in will make a difference if the old one was restrictive obviously. A lot of people who just replace the airbox without a cone filter and don't even get a heat shield won't get anything out of it.

Most people that put in drop in replacements will gain about 1 hp max. That is not a difference.

But neither is 5. It still flows better.

Break in your car properply and you will gain more than a filter could ever give you.
