View Thread: upgrading the ECU

BigRed
I am going to upgrade my ECU soon but I am worried about the dealer serviceing the car. Everytime i take the car to service they plug in the computer and fix some computer faults. If I have an upgraded ECU, is it possible that the dealership's computer will ruin the ECU for me or does it not make any difference?
thanx in advance

Sia Bani
I really don't know what kind of "chip" you'll need. Are you going to be replacing the whole ECU? Or will you just program the stock one with something like the power programmer from Hypertech.

People who replace the whole ECU, or chip the ECU, buy an extra ECU so they have it set for easy replacement. So, you'll have two, ready for swapping everytime you go into the dealer.

911GT2
A chip is usually a piggyback to your ECU. And it voids your warranty.

Sia Bani
Like on my friends S4, and all other people with chipped S4s, they have 2 ecu's, one with the chip and one stock, for easy replacement.

mustangdriver
Ding Ding! My Audi buddies normally have two ECU's. One with the new chip, one withough. They just swap them out before taking it to the dealer.

:drive:

BigRed
That must cost a lot for another ECU. I asked the dealership to take out the ECU so they know its gone and plus i dont have a warranty on my car anymore so it wont matter. The ECU upgrade alone costs $3100 and to get another ECU copied will cost $1500. Just not worth it for 60bhp more.

911GT2
Just get a chip if the warranty's already fucked.

k6kicker
damn they must have that engine really detuned if they can get 60 fricken horse out of a chip on a n/a engine

Actually, the car is a twin turbo with 420bhp(415 for the U.S) on it. Tuning it seems easy but just very pricy. An ECU upgrade for the car will cost $3500 alone without another copy of the ECU but since the warranty is gone, I dont have anything to lose.

k6kicker
wait, what kind of car are we talking about here? I was assuming a thunderbird but I'm dead wrong since those aren't twin turbos :tahoe:

Rotary Boy
I would imagine we are talking about his 996 911 turbo

k6kicker
I see

mrgokou
waait, for 60 ponies?. the extra money is worth it. Go and get the other ecu for the swap. You won't regret it. Trust me, getting 60 ponies from ecu tuning is one big gain.

911GT2
For 3000, you could get bigger turbos.

A-Tech
and run into a host of other upgrades he may need to support the bigger turbos.

actually K24 turbo chargers cost about $5500
plus you got to support the turbos by purchasing bigger and better intercoolers. Something like the GT2 intercoolers which cost $1300.
I chose to go with www.evoms.com
on their stage I which costs $3900 and adds 493bhp according to them. It includes the upgraded ECU, K&N filter, and billet diverter valves. I dont think I am going to go for the upgraded turbos but my next step would probably be the exhausts sytem and definitly from these guys www.europipe.be with the stage 2 one.

I just read on the site for EVO that the ecu upgrades have a lifetime warranty so i guess this answers my question about the dealership ruining the ECU. If anything happens, i will just take it back to them and let them fix it.

911GT2
I'd worry about putting that much power through an automatic BTW.

But since bigred seems to be a very wealthy person, it wouldn't be too much of a big deal.

masestylez
I'd go for the turbos. You have an automatic?

I save up money like almost every one would do. If i went and asked my dad for money to tune a car, i think i would end up with a slap in my face. It doesnt matter if the car is a tiptronic or manual transmission, the mods will still work.
http://www.evoms.com/porsche%20ec%20art.htm

911GT2
The tip is an electrically controlled automatic, and the TC can't handle near as much power as a clutch could.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you get the money to buy the car itself from your dad?
And btw, check out Autothority for performance pieces. Very good kits at decent prices.

Rotary Boy
to bad the resale of porsche's in where ever you are trying to sell it is sso bad(did you mention that?) beucase if I were you I would sell the porsche and get somthing that is an auto. maybe sell the porsche and use the money to get a 911 turbo that is a stick, not some slushbox. seriously the biggest gains you are gonna get in the speed department are gonna come from a stick.

eric
I never understood why someone would buy an expensive sports car, esp something as amazing as a 911 Turbo, as an auto.

masestylez
To get the image of successfulness without having to drive it like it's supposed to be.

BigRed
I should of known.....I will stick to the P car forums next time

911GT2- I prefer the tiptronic box because thats just me. I didnt buy the car to race camaro and trans am people who spend 3/4 of what i spend on a simple mod to get more hp on their rides. Down here our parents buy our cars. Same goes with Enigma and the other people who are from the same region that post here. I am sure even sia bani's parents bought him his tahoe so exactly why does it matter if my dad buys me my cars?

Rotary boy- This topic is about upgrading my ECU which I have done already and I had my questions answered for me also from people on other forums and from the people who are upgrading the ECU. I didnt mention about resale values or anything like that but since you mentioned it and would like to know, I plan to keep this car and not sell it. I got this car when I was 18. I am sure you have much more experience driving a manual car then me but I got the car at 18 and 18 is the age I actually get my driving license. I didnt know shit about driving manual and I am not like many of you here who think "if its not manual, it sux". to me its just a car which i enjoy driving and would like to add certain mods to it. oh and one more thing, I can always send this car to the u.k and make profit out of it since there is a waiting list over there. I started driving manual when i bought an Audi S3.....now I know how to drive it well and will have no problems for the next car. As to gains, dont forget, the 911 turbo has a rev limiter for a tip and manual. You dont believe me? go ask anyone with the same car. It has a rev limiter to 5500 on first and second.....same thing with tiptronic.

Here is a quick description of what tiptronic on the turbo is. It adapts to your driving skills and will work the same way it sees you shift so if you drive like a pansy, dont espect it to be a powerful beats but if you dont give a shit and drive it the way it is supposed to be, it will change the way you drive. Again, there is a lot to say about it and i dont feel like typing everything. There is a mode that allows you to switch to auto but so does a 360 modena, maserati 4200gt, and SMGII M3....I have driven every single one of them too and I would love to write about it but i have to get going. Have you ever been in a 996 turbo tiptronic or manaul to judge its capabilities? You wont complain about having a tip gearbox if you drive it but its common sense. If you love manual and cant drive with out it then go for a manual. If you want to relax but still drive the beast then go for the tip. as simple as that.

eric rxb- The answer to your question is: Because there are some people who think differently then you.

mases- Getting that image of successfulness is when you drive a Ferrari........NOT a Porsche.

eric
My point was that I've never met a person who knew how to drive manual who perferred to drive auto.

masestylez
Woa sorry cowboy I wasn't trying to insult you or anything. I percieve that buying a Porsche does give an image of success (depending on your area of course) because here there is ONE driven Porsche in the summer and about 4 garage kept I know of, so here it is a large bringer of good image. (BTW the one driven Porsche 911 is a Tiptronic as well) I wasn't liek trying to put your car down, I would still take it over a lot of other cars! The tiptronic is just a drawback for me because i've only driven manual cars.

Sia Bani
Don't worry about Big Red guys. He's really touchy about having an auto porsche turbo. We were supposed to be partners in creating a new auto forum website, until I asked "how could a true enthusiast prefer automatic"...or something of that sort, on another forum.

He's a good guy though, just a little sensitive.

911GT2
I know exactly what tiptronic is, and I know that it is a slushbox. It is an automatic transmission whether you like it or not, and that being, you can't hook up the same power you can with a manual and you're also losing significant power to the torque converter.

And BTW, it's cool that your dad can afford to buy you a 911 TT. I don't really hold anything against you for it.

I don't know if you're referring to my post or my previous post on AF. In any case, Oodis really shouldn't be telling us "I should have known..I'll stick to [other] forums next time..." as if we are flaming him.

masestylez
The previous post for sure. But it was all in good fun because some people need to take things in stride, especcially over the internet (this is not a shot at you Big Red, it's a call out to all the people who flame me for saying Chryler K-Cars just weren't all that great of a car). If we all just chilled the world would have no problems. :D

That wasn't the reason I turned down the offer, it was because i wanted to make a site of my own. Not as many members as you got here but it turned out to be ok except that the person I am paying to keep it up and runnning is being a dick recently so I might have to switch. The people who did www.exoticcarforums.com are the same ones who are doing mine so i thought they would make a good job
btw- ECF will flame anyone that they think is annoying. Shaman has some pretty good experience there too. But this is what pisses me off......people on forums mention they want to tune their RSX....so others help them. Then others step in and want to tune their auto benz and auto mercedes and even auto A4s and how they wanna lower them.....people help there too. But when someone mentions an auto porsche......all hell breaks loose. btw sia- the only reason I made my forums is to start a video link and i wouldnt start one if i didn't know i can get some really cool supercars in there. Right now I still didnt start it but i have a list of people who want to do it and the cars are just insane. One of the cars is a JUN skyline and recently someone filmed a 600bhp 996 turbo against an SE30 diablo....I am putting that clip on the site and i will share the link here when its done.

A-Tech
auto porsche omg you must be a huge loser get a life man! *rolls eyes* that was a joke mr sensitive :D

hey man, I am not dissing the car in any way (sorry if it came off that way) I just perferr a stick over a tiptronic. everyone has different preferences in what they want in a performance car. I have driven a '00 911 turbo, with aftermarket turbo back exhuast, BOV, ECU, and intake manifold. all with the same transmition your car has. It was an awesome car, but it just wasn't the kind of thing I would want, and in my post thats what I was saying "if it were me and it were my porsche"

also I can't remember if it was you or someone else on AF that mentioned the 911's depreciate very badly in your neck of the woods, thats where my comment on resale value came from.
