I think as far as FWD sport compacts go, this would have to be my favorite. The first one just showed up at Dave Smith Motors (largest Dodge truck dealership in the country) in Kellog, Idaho. We saw one on their lighted platform while taking a friend home. This is a mean looking car. It's under 20k and puts out 215hp. We're thinking of going and test driving one in a couple weeks, but from what I've read it seems like the perfect rice killer straight out of box. I would like to see the reactions from all the other sport compact makers in the next couple years. The same engine can be found in the new Chrysler PT Cruiser GT, but the intake manifold and I think the engine control unit are different. It seems like it could easily be the new king of Sport Compacts (at least any I can think of in recent years). My take about it is that it will either dominate easily or there could be a new wave of faster Sport Compacts. What do you guys think of it?

They had it on C&D tv I think this morning, but as luck would have it I came in at the very end and missed it! Anyway, it sounded pretty cool. I think it sounds like a bargain for the money, especially if its the kind of car you'd abuse for a couple years, then unload. I wonder what resale would be like, though...

It reminds me of the same principle behind the Dodge Omni. Anotehr note is that I heard its a rugged car, noisy, loud exhaust, power nothing, and basic interior. That will most likely turn some buyers off, I think they are expecting to sell somewhere around 5000 a year.

I've warmed up to the SRT-4 over time. At first when the concept car as out, I was one of the people saying "yeah, no way that'll get produced for $20K!". I'm glad I was wrong. I'll definitely check it out if I sell my car. It's stupid fast for that kind of money. And from what I've read, it can handle pretty well too.

Faster than a Mustang GT in the 1/4 mile and only 1/10th off of the 350Z! That rocks.

CLK-GTR
not exactly a pretty thing is it?

but the numbers add up, its just a matter of time to see if it can hold its own with handling and build quality.

Absolutely horrid looking but excellent numbers. If they could tone down the boy-racer image I'd be very interested. Otherwise I'm not sure I could live with the looks over the long term

Check this out, SRT-4 Rally car sponsored by Dodge:

I'm not totally sure yet guys....But i think this just may be the one fwd car i wouldn't mind owning, light, strong, equal half shafts......get some recent rubber on there and it might shock ALOT of people...even more so since dodge is encougaring modding so you know that engine is way overbuilt and would just adore you if you gave her some more boost and a big front mount IC......I must admitt :hitit: ...Ugly bitch or not :tahoe:

it already has a big front mount intercooler. It goes well with the stock 16G turbo too.

BTW
yikes on this car. the Hp war is certainly on.

stock with a front mount.....ME GUSTA MAS!!!!!!!! MUY BIEN!!!!!!!

Pretty it ain't. I agree.

But damn, I can't think of a better way to spend $20G's (assuming your buying new)

masestylez
The front has almos too many holes, it just looks funny, and i've never been really down with the Neon headlights/tailights either. 20k new though? Good deal I think

911GT2
Looks like ass.

Good powertrain, but given the money (and the availability), the MazdaSpeed Protege would win out.

mustangdriver
I like the Mazdaspeed better myself.

Sport Compact Car seems to think the SRT-4 is faster though. They rated it #1 in the $20K and under group with the Protege finishing 2nd. They tend to prefer the imports, so the fact that the Dodge won means it must have been pretty impressive!

It is vastly faster in a straight line, and supposedly not bad in the corners.

I just saw the Mazdaspeed today on C&D and i'm reading about it right now, I like everything about it more, other than that weird tangerine color(but it comes in black too, yay). It's on a 2000 piece production run like the Mazda MP3 was.

mustangdriver
I almost bought a black one here in Alexandria. Neat car!

take a test drive (http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/roadtests/012scc_dodge/)

I too was reading the Sport Compact magazine today and noticed the Dodge SRT-4 won "sport compact of the year", pretty cool.

They made some very good points why. Worth a read.

And I guess they didn't have a Honda worth nominating this year. ;)

The Si was on the list of $20K and under vs the SRT-4. They trashed it for the most part. Which they should because it's slow and doesn't handle for crap!
