View Thread: Audi A8L 4.2 quattro - World premiere in the United States

Audi is to present the long-wheelbase version of its new A8 4.2 quattro at the Detroit Motor Show (4th - 10th January 2003). In addition to its dynamic performance, generous space and luxury the A8L 4.2 quattro is the ideal top-class sedan for long-distance travel. Its wheelbase -compared with the standard version - has been increased by 130 millimeters and now measures 3074 millimeters. The resulting gain in space benefits the rear passengers in full: with the front seats fully forward, rear passengers can enjoy a legroom of 1075 millimeters - first-class standards of space. With this third version Audi extends the new A8 range just a few months after this modelís initial launch.

That's a good looking car, but at a price that I don't think I'll ever touch.

If I ever do get into the market for an expensive Audi, hopefully I'll have a fast S8 to choose from.

id rather have a mb or lexus over the audi because of superior... everything

silverTA2002
I dunno, the new S4 and RS6 should be pretty sweet rides, and appeal to the pocket books a bit better than the M or AMG models.

audis lack in speed and handling but are definitely more comfortable to sit in for a long journey in comparison to an mb or bmw. i dunno how these new cars could be compared to the m series from bimmer because the m is a 2 door market while the audi is 4 doors maybe a comparison with the mb e class is more appropriate.

masestylez
RS6 is the fastest stock wagon ever I believe

The E55 isnt in estate form yet is it?

mustangdriver
Haven't seen one. One of the best track rides I ever had was in an E55 AMG with a pro-driver working for MB. That guy was NUTS. Werewulfe (AWF member) can back that up, he was in the back, I was in the passenger seat. That car was sideways through most of the track. I had to pry my hand off of the door handle.

Well, partially true. The M3 is a 2 door, but the M5 is a 4. Also, the M3 had a 4 door in 98.

They're compared and cross shopped all the time though (M3 and S4). Pretty much because they were the only two high performance mid luxury small cars for a few years.

TA is right, you'd be surprised how competitive Audi is in the luxury performance area. Although the new V8 S4 is actually a tad be SLOWER than the turbo version

eric
Audi/VW has always had decent Turbo'ed engines, but their NA ones have always fallen a little short.

The quoted times from Audi on the new S4 are slower than the magazine tested times on the old S4. Audi traditionally underated the speed of the old S4 by a few tenths, so I would wait until they start coming out and get tested more thoroughly to judge on that.

But it is true that they are not going to be much faster. Interesting note is that they have pretty much eliminated all belts on the new V8. Everything is chain driven IIRC, to shorten the engine so it would fit.

silverTA2002
That's one thing we'll have to wait and see about, the actual acceleration of the new S4.

With 90hp more than the previous generation, and the fact that it weighs within 100lbs of the TT version, means that it should haul some serious azz.

I'm betting that with AWD and more power than the M3, it should easily beat it to 60mph, and it'll be close in the 1/4 mile.

The "estimates" by Audi seem extremely conservative.

lexus1581
what im hearing from audi and c/d is that the s4 is gonna be slower to 60 than the m3 and also in the 1/4 mile

silverTA2002
If that's the case, then either the engine isn't as powerful as they say it will be, the gearing and /or aerodynamics suck, or the car will weigh a whole lot more than first expected.

Because with AWD and that much power, it should have no problem taking down the M3 to 60.

Kinda like how the RS6 with 450hp and AWD should have no problem beating the M5 to 60.

It's all about traction.

i think once this beauty hits the streets we will be seeing a lot of them

lexus1581
i disagree audi cant compete with mb and bimmer still... they show better performance numbers and consumers love them as well

masestylez
Audi has a weird heritage, i've always wondered what their goal is.

jaguarz160
audi does have a wierd goal but you have to admit some models are worth making

masestylez
Oh I love audi cars to death. Don't get me wrong there. Like the Porsche/Audi 917/30 mmmmm :D They should let them enter it in NASCAR. hahaha

besides a few audis im gonna say that mb and bimmer totally out perform their german buddy by far

masestylez
Their place was always in racing. MB and BMW imo couldn't build as good as rallye car as Audi did and probably still could. Plus Audi's close relationship with Porsche means cool niche cars (RS series), I wish they would stop acting like a luxury car maker and make sports cars (TT was a good step)

lexus1581
i agree they should take their race car tech and build something beastley not luxurious

masestylez
Although their cars have some tech ahead of BMW and MB, as far as construcion goes.

lexus1581
they took a nice step by putting a v8 in the s4 with awd but what ive heard is its not that fast

mustangdriver
Want to know where Audi can compete (dominate actually):
